YOUTH AND JUNIOR

……………………………

Please note that the club’s Youth road and Youth Academy activities are currently suspended. We will post on Facebook when the activities below re-commence.
……………………………

Our club’s Youth Academy aims to promote a vibrant youth cycling culture and help young people to become expert cyclists who grow to become lifelong, safety-conscious, and respectful riders. We aim to be inclusive, diverse and accepting, and to create a community where young people of all backgrounds and abilities can cycle for fun and health.

Youth Academy

Our Youth Academy was founded in 2011 to give a cohesive structure to Youth development in the club, involving parents, coaches, and children.

There are four main pillars to the Academy’s strategy:

SPROCKET ROCKET

Sprocket Rocket is Cycling Ireland’s fun skills programme, adapted by the Youth Academy, where children aged 9+ are taught four ‘FUNdamental’ cycling skills by qualified Sprocket Rocket Instructors. The four basic cycling techniques: Balance, Braking, Cornering and Pedalling. The young rider is brought through three progressions in each of these skills. From the Sprocket Rocket programme, the young rider can progress to our youth road groups.

BEGINNERS

New Youth-level cyclists are taught how to cycle safely in a group and the basic skills necessary to cycle safely on the road. The main aim here is skill improvement and safety awareness.

Killarney Cycling Club Beginners

INTERMEDIATE

Skills are improved and speed develops as we start to introduce more structured spins and workouts. Again the aim here is skill improvement, safety awareness, and enjoyment.

Youth Racing

ADVANCED

This is for older Youth members, usually U-16s and Juniors, or anyone with the capability and skills to cycle at this level. These spins are structured and aimed more at performance improvement, as all bike and safety skills will be second nature to the rider at this stage.

PARENTS

Parents are encouraged to become involved at every level and play an active role in supporting the Youth programme.
